Why Your Book Needs a Subtitle (and How to Write One Right)
Have you ever searched for a book on Amazon, clicked on one with a catchy subtitle, and ended up buying it? That’s actually smart marketing!
Yet, I’ve noticed a common mistake lately: many publishers leave the subtitle space blank. Even though KDP lists subtitles as optional, this space is a valuable opportunity. It’s your chance to tell buyers more about your book directly in the search results and convince them to click and learn more.
A well-crafted subtitle can boost your book’s visibility, appeal to buyers’ interests, and improve your chances of making a sale. It’s a small but powerful detail that can make all the difference!
So, how do you write an effective subtitle?
Do:
- Use a descriptive sentence that captures the essence of your book.
- Include relevant keywords naturally to help your book show up in search results.
Don’t:
- Keyword stuff—KDP’s algorithms may flag it.
- Overfill the space—too many words will be cut off with “…,” making your subtitle ineffective and risking a warning email from KDP. Together, your title and subtitle must be 200 characters or less.
Here’s an example:
Example 1: No Subtitle
Title: Giraffe Journal
(This is simple but doesn’t tell potential buyers much beyond the basic idea.)
Example 2: With a Subtitle
Title: Giraffe Journal
Subtitle: A Wildlife-Themed Blank Lined 100-Page Diary for Animal Lovers to Capture Thoughts, Daily Reflections, and Creative Ideas
(This subtitle adds context, keywords, and appeals directly to the target audience.)
Remember: You can only set your subtitle once when publishing—KDP doesn’t let you change it later. Make sure it’s spot-on from the start!
I encourage you to create a compelling subtitle that sells. It’s a simple yet powerful way to attract more potential buyers and showcase your amazing books!
