My in-laws lived in the same home for over 20 years. They raised four kids there, and by the time they moved the house was over 100 years old. Because of its age and well-worn state, a developer purchased it for renovation.
But what they didn’t know was that their century old home in the historic area of the city was in fact on a septic system. You can imagine their surprise when the developer discovered a huge metal object while grading in the backyard. Everyone was stunned.
You see they had been paying the city water department for sewer service 20+ years. When in fact, they never used it; it was all being routed to the septic tank.
It reminds me of all the clients I meet who tell me their web guy has them on the internet. They pay the guy a lot of money. But when I search, I don’t find them. They are paying for something they aren’t getting. It happens all the time.
My in-laws were refunded for the last ten years of their bill for the service they never used (the city doesn’t keep records any longer).
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting you go digging around in your backyard for a sewer system. But I am telling you to do your research. Check yourself out online. Where does your business rank? Are you on the front page of Google? Are prospective clients able to find you?
Just don’t pay for crap you aren’t getting.
