About Google Profiles

Google indicates that 25% of searches are for people. If you’ve ever used Google to search your own name or to find a person, Google Profiles makes the process much easier.

Google displays profiles at the bottom of search results on the first page If you have something to sell or promote, a Google Profile is a must for you.

What is a Google Profile?

A Google Profile is a page hosted on Google which is tied to your name. Content on your profile page is defined by you. Information you can include are about you, images, text, cross links to all of your websites and more.

Why You Need a Google Profile

  • It instantly optimizes your name!
  • It’s totally free!
  • You show up on the first page of Google!

Important Points to Include on Your Page

  • Your real name. Consider how someone might be searching for you and use that name. If you have multiple versions of your name you can also add them (alias, nickname, maiden or previous name).
  • A profile image (headshot).
  • A great short biography.
  • Links to your website, blog and other online profiles (YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, Flikr, etc.)

Limitations and Concerns

At the time of writing this article Google Profiles are only available in the United States.

Making your information public with Google is great for promoting your name. However, some may find concern with allowing Google access to everything about you (which also includes your links). Know that you are a commodity online. Marketing to you as an internet user is more targeted when there is additional information available about you. You see the same type of customized marketing in your social network (Facebook, MySpace, etc.) which displays advertisements in the sidebar targeted to you. However, most people find the benefits of having a Google Profile to be of a higher value.

How to Set up Your Google Profile

Try it out

  • Go to Google (www.google.com) and type in your name, what comes up on the first page?
  • Now type in my name "Michelle Brubaker." You will see at the bottom of the first page an image of me and link to my Google Profile!

Now go out there and get yourself found on Google!
